The Power of Gratitude

Here in Salt Lake, the heat of the summer has released its grip and we’re enjoying a blustery morning of rain showers.

This morning I’m feeling grateful, and inspired by gratitude itself.

Meister Eckhart is quoted as saying, “If the only prayer you said in your whole life was thank you, that would suffice.”

Brother David Steindl Rast said, “In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful, but gratefulness that makes us happy.”

Sometimes this stuff can strike me as fluffy or corny, know what I mean? Until I actually practice it. And then I start saying things that might sound fluffy and corny. :) But it’s true.

We’ve shared this short and super-touching video of Brother David before, but I thought I’d post it again. I am delighted I took 5 minutes to watch it today.

I just learned about World Gratitude Day, which is coming up next weekend. Read about it, and an inspiring contest, created by Alexandra Franzen, here.

Sometimes, writing this newsletter week after week, I might wonder – why are we doing this?

Several times in the past month I’ve had the surprising and delightful experience of running into some radiant human being out and about – at Mesa’s school, at the grocery store, at an event – and he or she says, “I love your newsletter!”

It means so much to me to hear this from those I didn’t even know were reading.

I speak for both Carl and myself when I say we are deeply grateful for YOU.

Thanks for reading and for being a part of our community. You are a gift to us.

In closing, here’s a poem from Mary Oliver, whose way of living in gratitude inspires me to no end.

I am standing
on the dunes
in the heat of summer
