Natural Movement and Feldenkrais: Embodying Awareness, Strength and Spontaneity

Natural Movement and Feldenkrais:
Embodying Awareness, Strength and Spontaneity
A 5-Week Course with Carl Rabke
Begins Thursday, Oct 17 @ Mindful Yoga Collective

“Movement is life, life is a process. Improve the quality of the process, and you improve the quality of life itself.”-Moshe Feldenkrais

As human beings, we are wired to move. Movement has always been essential to our survival and our thriving. Movement is central to how we learn, how we connect and interact with others. Unfortunately, in our modern lifestyle, most of the daily movement repertoire that has existed for tens of thousands of years has become extremely limited. Most of us don’t squat, run, jump, balance, or walk a great distance on our way to work. Many of us sit, (or stand) and interact with screens for a good chunk of our day. The lack of movement in modern life impacts us in so many ways, from a lack of strength and mobility, to chronic pain aind injuries, from the state of our psychological health, to our sense of possibility in the world.

One of our beloved Feldenkrais teachers, Ruthy Alon, coined the term

The grammar of spontaneity
In this course, we will be working with a series of Feldenkrais lessons and natural movement explorations to help you grow, and embody your own unique grammar of spontaneity in movement.  This course can be a helpful addition to an existing practice like yoga, Pilates or martial arts, or it can help support you in learning to grow your own unique movement practice. Ways that you can move when you are walking out on a trail and find a fallen tree on the ground, or ways you can move while standing in an airport, while everyone else is curled over a phone or computer. Transitions you can explore when you are at ecstatic dance, or getting out of bed in the morning. Practices you can do when your back is tweaked, and you have a few minutes to get down on the floor.

Some of the things these lessons will support are:
-Strengthening
-Mobility
-Balance
-Flexibility
-Coordination
-Proprioception
-Embodied Sensitivity
-Grounded, Centered Presence
-A Youthening and Vitality in Movement

In each class, we will explore 2 or 3 shorter Feldenkrais Awareness Through Movement lessons connected to functions like squatting, crawling, balancing, walking, jumping, bear-walking, rolling and more. And we will learn how to play with movement sequences and transitions that are dynamic and strengthening, but not objectifying and repetitive.

This class is for any age and any body type.
I have loved this video of parkour for senior citizens- and it is in alignment with my view that there is a way you can access dynamic, strengthening, spontaneous movement at any point in life, whatever shape you are in.

“Can you imagine a tiger sweating it out on an elliptical and frequently checking its heart rate so that it could keep itself in shape? Certainly not. It moves like a tiger was meant to move, and you can do the same.”

-Erwan Le Corre, founder of Movnat
