The Mystery of Life Being Lived

A note from Carl:The Mystery of Life Being Lived and Tai Chi in The Park Registration Opens Today

Greetings! A little Rilke to begin:

And yet, though we strain
against the deadening grip
of daily necessity.

I sense there is mystery:

All life is being lived.

I appreciate how easily the emergence of spring can interrupt the deadening grip of daily necessity and illuminate the mystery of life being lived.

I know what it is like to live in the mind open to mystery, and I am very familiar with what is like to miss it. These states can be so close to each other, yet worlds apart in my experience.

One of the attentional capacities that I find most valuable to cultivate is the ability to find interest in what my thinking mind does not find interesting. What I take for granted, or as a given…Occasions when I think “Oh I know that…” Penetrating that, to me, is a doorway into the mystery.

Can a pause with something “I know,” and could easily glaze over, and let it reveal itself in a new way?
Could I let an experience linger for a few more moments so that it drops down, and touches my beyond what is already known?

Whether it is a sprout coming up from the fecund soil, or the weight of my butt on this stool as I am typing…

Where are some of the places where your thinking mind does not have interest?
Where do you think “Oh, I know that…”?
Could there be some mysteries hidden in there?

The Mystery of Life Being LivedMysteries, Yes

Truly, we live with mysteries too marvelous
to be understood.

How grass can be nourishing in the
mouths of the lambs.
How rivers and stones are forever
in allegiance with gravity
while we ourselves dream of rising.
How two hands touch and the bonds
will never be broken.
How people come, from delight or the
scars of damage,
to the comfort of a poem.

Let me keep my distance, always, from those
who think they have the answers.

Let me keep company always with those who say
“Look!” and laugh in astonishment,
and bow their heads.
