I’m so thrilled to be offering my very first online course. Wahoooo!

Can I tell you the truth?

I wanted to get this email written days before I did.
Yesterday morning, I developed a weird body-symptom of a shoulder and rib out of whack in such a way I couldn’t take a full deep breath without wincing in pain.
Then, the evening seemed to go haywire with 4-year-old tantrums punctuated by spontaneous drop-bys from wonderful friends.
Dinner was late. Chaos seemed to reign.

Then finally, at 8:30pm last night Carl took Mesa on a drive (hoping he’d fall asleep, which he didn’t) so I could finish this email, and I sat down feeling anything but grateful. Kind of grumpy, in fact, and part of me was feeling rather resentful that now that I had time to write, I felt so crappy.

I knew it would be totally out of integrity to write an “inspired email” from that state.

So I dropped in and decided to work with a practice of Cultivating the Field of Gratitude.

A favorite quote of Gandhi’s that guides my life came to me,
“The means you use must embody the end you seek.”
Nails me every time.

So I did an embodied gratitude reflection on my day.
And sure enough, after just a few minutes, my breathing slowed and my belly softened, my heart felt warm, and there was something of a feeling of wholeness and happiness humming in my cells.
I felt deeply touched.
I felt blessed about a gajillion times more than I felt irritated.
Like magic!

I’ve written several times about how Rick Hanson’s point about the brain being wired to receive positive experience like teflon and negative experience like velcro has been a pivotal insight for me.
Sure enough, before I did the reflection, my velcro was rather sticky for the “not how I wanted it to be” parts of my day, while my non-stick response was making me oblivious to all the good and reeeally good things in my life.

This practice is so worthwhile, I kind of want to climb on my desk right this minute and wave my arms in the air I feel so excited about it!

I’m deeply excited to offer my first online course – The Embody Gratitude Project – and share these wonderful practices with you.

Let’s start with this point right off the bat.
To co-opt a favorite line from Zen teacher Cheri Huber:

This course will teach you nothing you don’t already know, it asks for all the enthusiasm and attention you can muster, and it’s 100% guaranteed NOT to improve you at all! :)

How’s that for salesmanship?

Oh well.

I want to be 100% clear that the intention for this course is not to improve you.

(I don’t think you need fixing. I don’t think there is anything wrong with you.)

My intention is simply to offer a hugely inspired dose of support and encouragement so you can explore the art of paying attention to your life in ways that will inevitably increase your joy and well-being. As you are. As it is.

I have a little quote on my bulletin board from Martha Beck which reads,

“Your job is to maximize your own happiness, kindness and health.”

I can’t think of a more simple, easy, and powerful practice to accomplish all 3 of those than working with what we call in Embodied Life work “Cultivating the Field of Gratitude.”

In this course we will work with the powerful human capacities for intention and attention in ways that can change our brains and our attentional habits so that we become truly grateful people, experiencing joy regularly.

Right in the midst of our messy, imperfect lives.

I’m excited to share this journey with you.

I’m hugely inspired about the power of these practices as I’ve seen them impact my own life and others.

For 5 weeks this summer we’ll explore embodying gratitude.

I intend for this course to be simple, down-to-earth and easy to implement.

Also hugely inspiring, nourishing, and fun.

I love this point from Brene Brown’s wonderful book The Gifts of Imperfection:

“In many ways this research has not only taught me new ways to think about how I want to live and love, it’s taught me about the relationship between my experiences and choices. One of the most profound changes in my life happened when I got my head around the relationship between gratitude and joy. I always thought joyful people were grateful people. I mean, why wouldn’t they be? They have all of that goodness to be grateful for. But after spending countless hours collecting stories about joy and gratitude, three powerful patterns emerged:

  • Without exception, every person I interviewed who described living a joyful life or who described themselves as joyful, actively practiced gratitude and attributed their joyfulness to their gratitude practice.
  •  Both joy and gratitude were described as spiritual practices that were bound to a belief in human interconnectedness and a power greater than us.
  • People were quick to point out the differences between happiness and joy as the difference between a human emotion that’s connected to circumstances and a spiritual way of engaging with the world that’s connected to practicing gratitude.”

As brother David Steindl-Rast wisely says,
“In daily life we must see that it is not happiness that makes us grateful but gratefulness that makes us happy.”

Here’s a poem from the ever-inspiring Mary Oliver, who is a master at paying attention to the world in ways that bring gratefulness, joy, and inspiration to herself and countless others.

By the way, I took the photo above of a honey locust (along with a deep sniff of it’s perfume) in my neighborhood yesterday. Are they blooming by you?

A 5-Week online course for YOU.

When? Our journey will begin June 2 and wrap up on July 4th. With fireworks. :)

What’s the format? You’ll receive 3 Embodied Gratitude Encouragements per week via email.

  • Each Monday you’ll receive an inspiring lesson (audio + written) guiding you to explore cultivating gratitude in an embodied way throughout the week.
  • Each Wednesday you’ll receive a reminder – a concentrated dose of inspiration.
  • Each Friday you’ll receive an invitation to reflect in a specific way on the week’s practices. (Studies show reflection is actually the most important part of the learning process.)

Of course, wonderful poetry to inspire and open your heart will be woven throughout.

How much does it cost? The 5-week course is $75.

What do I need to participate in this e-course?

For this course, all you need is the ability to check your email a few times a week, plus the willingness to experiment with your own attention. Bringing a sense of humor is wonderful too. And if you like to journal as part of your reflection process, you might like to have a journal and pen at the ready. Easy peasy!
