The Art of Walking
Saturday, August 25th, 2-6pm
“Sometimes, the truth depends on a walk around the lake,” wrote Wallace Stevens.
Often people don’t think of walking as an art, but to us, it absolutely is, and one with infinite opportunity for learning and refinement. Whatever your age. Whatever your condition.
In many ways, walking has become a lost art.
How often do you see someone just walking down the street without talking on the phone or absorbed in a gadget? How often do you or others you know simply walk, and enjoy the pleasure of walking for its own sake?
People will often drive around for ten minutes looking for a parking spot rather than walking an extra block to get to their destination.
After most of us accomplish the great feat of learning how to walk when we are between one and two years old, our walking just becomes “how we walk” and we rarely wonder into how well we walk, or the possibility of improving our walking.
Do you know how much creativity and curiosity you can bring to your own walking?
And through such explorations, how much ease and efficiency is possible?
Is your walking pleasurable?
Do nagging aches and pains tend to arise?
Here’s a really important question:
Do they need to?
In this afternoon workshop we will explore the rich terrain of human gait.
We will learn how we can improve our walking at any age or in any shape, updating our old habits into new choices, and learning how with awareness and curiosity, we can continue to refine the way we walk for as long as we are alive.
We predict you will leave feeling more grounded, more light, walking with more grace, more efficiency, more pleasure, and with a spring in your step. :)
We’ll work with several brilliant Awareness Through Movement lessons indoors, and weather permitting, also do some explorations walking outside. We’d so love to have you join us for this unique and vitalizing workshop!!!!
Improving Posture Without Correction
Sunday, August 26th 2-6pm
From grandmothers to gym teachers, form online posture gurus to yoga instructors, we have all received a plethora of information on “correct posture.” Draw the stomach in, pull the shoulders back and down, engage the psoas, lift the chin, tuck the chin…The question is- Does it work? Does it hold? Is it natural? Sustainable? What happens when you forget to pull your shoulders back?
When we see the ease of children sitting on the floor, or standing, or running- they are not giving themselves a list of instructions to follow, they are not looping or tucking or activating anything. They are naturally aligned, relaxed, upright, as they have not yet learned the many habits of unnecessary effort and shortening that we have learned as adults.
Often, the corrections we try to make impose on our posture become just as much (if not more of) a problem than what we were trying to correct in the first place.
“Can you imagine your feelings when you discover that you are an ever-changing live organism, capable of self-correction and advancement for as long as you live? The optimism which accompanies the learning process, people’s enthusiasm when they discover it, as well as their appreciation, are what make this method so attractive, and inspire commitment in both students and teachers.” Ruthy Alon on the Feldenkrais Method
In this workshop we will explore an approach to alignment that is not based in correction, not based in top-down instructions, but rather in the cultivation of awareness, the discoveries of our invisible habits, and the reclaiming of our intelligent organsism’s ever-present capacity for self-organization. Through the movement lessons you can experience the radically different feeling of your shoulders naturally resting back and down without trying, of your full, elegant height being revealed without effort, almost by surprise, and the discovery that your own embodied awareness is much more intelligent, reliable, sustainable, and surely more enjoyable than any postural correction you could impose on yourself.
